The Bluetooth Special Interest Group has formally adopted Bluetooth High Data Throughput (HDT) as an optional feature of the Bluetooth Core 7.0 specification, raising maximum bit rates on Bluetooth LE devices from 2Mbps to 7.5Mbps, nearly a fourfold increase. The first HDT-capable devices are expected in early 2027, with a broader rollout to follow. The higher throughput is intended to support higher-quality wireless audio, spatial and multi-channel audio, and more efficient firmware updates and data syncing, while also improving reliability and accommodating data-heavy AI and spatial computing applications. The feature builds on Bluetooth LE's existing low-power design, meaning the speed gains do not come at the cost of the efficiency that distinguishes LE from always-connected alternatives. The industry now awaits the first wave of supporting devices, with CES in January a likely venue for early announcements.
